How to Store Wine at Home
You don't need a temperature-controlled cellar to store wine well. Here are practical tips for keeping your gifted wines in great shape.
Temperature is everything. Wine's biggest enemy is heat. Keep bottles between 55-65°F if possible. A cool closet, basement, or under-stairs storage works well. Avoid garages, attics, and spots near the stove.
Consistency matters more than perfection. A steady 68°F is better than swinging between 55°F and 75°F. Avoid locations with big temperature swings.
Keep bottles on their sides. For wines with natural cork, horizontal storage keeps the cork moist and prevents it from drying out and letting air in. Screwcap wines can be stored any direction.
Avoid light and vibration. UV light can damage wine over time. Keep bottles away from windows and fluorescent lights. Vibration (like on top of the fridge) can disturb the aging process.
Most wines are meant to be enjoyed young. Unless you specifically registered for age-worthy wines, plan to drink most bottles within 1-3 years. Don't save everything for a special occasion — a Tuesday can be special too.
